The Importance of שמות in Judaism: Due Monday Nov 2nd

This week we'll be learning about Shemos and the kedusha of the Name of HaShem. How much does your name affect who you are? Do you know of someone who's name is a big part of their identity? Watch the video below for inspiration: WHY is it so frustrating when this man "messes up" the workers names? https://youtu.be/XhBD1553fhk

  1. I think your name is so important because its part of your identity. You can't just describe someone as that person. You say their name. Also when you don't know someones name it makes them feel unimportant. You get someones attention by saying their name. We don't realize it but names are a big deal. I think its frustrating for the workers because its their name he is messing up it makes them feel like their name isn't important to him.

  2. A name does not define who you are, because it is just the way you have been called since you were born. Your name can be the complete opposite of how you act. Your name does not define who you are as a person, for the most part. If your a kind, caring person you wont necessarily have a name that describe those traits. The names of g-d define who he is, they are so special, holy, and spiritual therefore, we are not suppose to say his name in vain. A name is not suppose to define who you are its just suppose to be what you are called to bring your attention. The name’s of G-d describe who he is.

  3. A person's name does describe who we are. It's an integral part of our identity and something we personally relate to since the first few days of life. Many times our name isn't random but it is inspired or given to us based on a previous member of our family to remember that person and make sure their memory lives on. Names can also symbolize circumstances around the birth like my brother whose name is Elior (Eli = g-d, Or = light). He was born on Chanukkah (He was also named Pessach named after his great grandfather, so he took on both). Even in the Torah we see how important a name is. Just like Avraham and Sara had their names changed to emphasis different parts of their lives and different actions they took. With all these reasons going into a name we understand why names are taken so seriously and why people hate it when we mess up their name.

  4. i don't think your identity describes who you are as a person however its a way for people to identify you. it allows you to know the person a little more if you know there name. a name is what people connect certain character traits to. for example an essay; theres a tittle and a paragraph. now the tittle usually the two words to tell you what your gonna read about but you don't really now the details or the truth of it all to you actually read the paragraph. this is similar to when you meet a person. so its frustrating when the man messes up there name because although its may not define who they are its a start to there identity.

  5. Your name is a big part of you because it defines who you are and its your identity. If we all didnt have names, in a way we would be nobody and not know who we are and have no identity to ourselves. A name is also very important. With just one name, you can find out a ton of imformation. Like where this person lives, when they were born, who is in their family. Thats why putting your name publicly online can be dangeours. Some one whos name that is a big part of their identity could be a rabbi of a shul where the whole community knows who he is or a celebrity like Justin Bieber or Ariana Grande, just by hearing their name you know what kind of person they are. But most importantly, The name of Hashem. He has the most imprortant name, he even has a few. Its very important that we know Hashem's name so we know when to say it and we know to respect it and not just act like its another word.It was frustrating that the man kept on messing up on the workers names because it was so ovious what theyre names were and, they even had name tags, and he still got them wrong. he was showing that names are important and it can insult someone if you treat their name like its nothing.

  6. Your name is your identity its a major part of you because its who you are. In my opinion I think that your name doesn't really define your personality the way you act does. For most people their name is the most important thing about them. When you are in school or hanging out with your friends they don't call you a random name they call you by your name because that's you who are. In this video the people are getting upset because this guy keeps messing up their names, their identities. If it were me in this video I would also get frustrated because I wouldn't like it if someone was to mess up my name.

  7. A name helps define who you are. Many times in Judaism a baby is named after someone that has passed. My sister got lucky and made off with a hyphenated name (Sara-Shifra). Her Bat Mitzvah speech was actually on her name and what the name mean to her and others. Being named after someone who passed helps keep their memory alive. It is also and identity for oneself. A name is a part of you. When you mess someones name up it can come off as not caring and possibly even disrespectful to the memory. It is okay to mess someones mane up but once you are told how to say it, you should say it that way. My sister's names is mispronounced all the time at this point it does not bother her. It makes my frustrated sometimes when my name is incorrectly pronounced. Instead of Elisa I get Alyssa. It gets pretty annoying considering there is an Alyssa in the grade.I can be frustrating because your name is your identity and for it to be said wrong can be hurtful that the person does not care enough to fix their mistake. My name never really defined my characteristics considering I do not know much about my great grandmother Elise sadly. A name does not always define ones identity but but you can make it. Saying ones name wrong might not seem like such a big deal but in reality it means something to the person you are saying it to.

  8. A name gives one and identity. It is how someone can adress someone properly without using the pronouns he or she. I dont particullarly believe that a name creates a personality. Like for insatnace my name is Rebecca, yes it is a bibical name for one of the four mothers, but it doesnt define me. Bibical Rebecca and I do have a few things in common i am not denying hat but that doesnt mean that we have everything in common. Although when in comes to god or hashem is name does give him personality. We are told about this being who is judging and kind at the same time and therefor is named elokim ( probably spelled it wrong) which mean judgment and y- k- v-k which means god of kidness. In the video that was shown a guy was pronouncing people's name wrong and the people were therefore getting frustrated. If it were me in that situation I for one would feel very uncomfortable and frustrated because even though I explained that a neme does not define who you are, it is still an identity that you will have forever,
